Tips for Pre & Post Injection to Minimize Bruising & Swelling

If you're considering getting BOTOX® or dermal filler treatment to minimize wrinkles and fine lines, knowing how to reduce the risk of bruising is useful.

At Greco MD, our team is committed to providing patients with the most effective and natural-looking results possible. Every patient has unique needs, and we work closely with each individual to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses their concerns.

With over 30 years of experience and expertise, our team has helped countless patients achieve their desired looks.

Keeping some basic tips in mind before and after your treatment can help with a quicker recovery. Following these tips will allow you to enjoy a smoother recovery period and get the best results from your injectable treatment.

Avoid Blood Thinning Medication or Supplements

Certain over-the-counter medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can have a blood thinning effect on the body. This includes painkillers like aspirin and ibuprofen. Some dietary supplements can also have blood thinning effects.

This can increase your risk of bruising during the procedure. Avoid taking these medications for two weeks before your scheduled treatment for best results.

During your pre-treatment consultation, be sure to discuss any medications you are currently taking so we can take note of them and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.

Please note that you should not stop any prescription medications (for serious health conditions like heart problems) without talking to your primary care physician.

Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine

Alcohol and caffeine can also increase the risk of bruising. It's best to avoid these substances for at least 24 hours before and after injection day. This is because alcohol and caffeine can increase the risk of swelling and bruising.

Use Ice Packs or Cold Compress

Applying a cold compress to the treatment area after the procedure can help constrict the blood vessels and slow the blood flow to the treated areas. This can help reduce swelling and minimize bruising.

Additionally, applying an ice pack just before treatment can help numb the area and help alleviate discomfort from the needles. Please ask our staff for a cold compress at your appointment if you need one.

Use Arnica Products

Available in a topical gel or oral capsule, arnica is a homeopathic drug that relieves muscle pain, stiffness, swelling, and bruising. The odorless and non-greasy gel can be applied directly to the treated area. The capsules can be taken a few days pre and post-treatment.

Avoid Strenuous Exercise

Strenuous exercise can increase your heart rate and blood flow. Typically, you should avoid any activities that increase blood flow for two to three days after treatment.

This will give any capillaries, which may have been damaged during the procedure, time to heal quickly.

Sleep With Your Head Elevated

Keep your head elevated higher than the rest of your body while sleeping. Follow this practice for the first couple of days after treatment to avoid any accidental pressure on the treatment area. This can help reduce bruising and decrease recovery time.
