Otoplasty (Ear)Otoplasty is the surgery designed to correct protruding ears. This surgery is usually performed on children but may also be performed on adults. The ear usually reaches maturation by five or six years of age and can be operated on at this time. Frequently children with protruding ears are ridiculed by their peers because of their appearance. It may be prudent for you to consider having this surgery done before your child enters school for this reason.

Some questions asked about otoplasty include:
Will I have much discomfort?
There is usually minimal discomfort after otoplasty and this can usually be controlled by oral medication. Will I have a scar?
The incision and the scar are placed behind the ear. All necessary work is done through this incision, and once the scar heals it is well concealed. What can I expect immediately after the surgery?
A dressing will be placed on the ears to maintain position and keep swelling to a minimum. This will be removed the next day. Instructions will be given regarding the cleaning and care of the ears. It will be necessary to use a headband to place over the ears especially at night for several weeks to prevent injury to the ears during sleep. What are the risks?
There are risks with any surgery; however, the risks are minimal as with all facial plastic procedures. Bleeding, infection and unfavorable scarring are rare. These will be discussed during your consultation as well as ways to avoid them. Asymmetry between the ears usually exists before surgery. This will be improved after surgery but may still exist to a minor extent.
