Nasal Aesthetic Surgery/Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common facial cosmetic procedures performed. The goal of rhinoplasty is to place the nose into better harmony with the rest of the face and should be individualized to each patient. My goal is to give you a result which fits the characteristics of your face without an over-operated look.

Patients sometimes complain of difficulty with breathing in addition to an obvious deformity. This can usually be corrected at the time of surgery and is known as septoplasty. Nasal aesthetic surgery is a procedure where shape and function are of equal importance. The nose should allow the patient to breathe easily as well as have a pleasing appearance.

Most nasal surgeries are performed by making small incisions in the nose and a small incision across the skin between the nostrils. This is known as an open rhinoplasty. At times the procedure may be performed without the incision between the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty). Sometimes it is necessary to make small incisions at the base of the nostrils to help narrow the nose. Noses can also be deformed from previous trauma. It is important for us to know this because insurance will help reimburse the patient for traumatic deformities of the nose.

Before
After

Some questions commonly asked about nasal surgery include:

What will I look like immediately after surgery?
A small splint will be placed on the nose immediately after the surgery and remain for one week at which time the splint will be removed and the nose cleaned. There may be some bruising and swelling around the eyes but there are several things that can help including medication and cool compresses.

Is there much pain involved with the surgery?
Usually there is a little discomfort with nasal surgery. Oral medication will be prescribed to help with the discomfort.

Will my nose be packed?
I usually do not pack the nose after nasal surgery. This is because a special quilting suture is used to control any bleeding. This greatly decreases the amount of discomfort associated with nasal packing. A small drip dressing will be applied after surgery.

How long will my nose be swollen?
As a rule, 80% of the swelling is gone after two weeks; another 10% after two months. The tip of the nose may retain swelling longer and continued improvement in the tip can be seen over the next several months. There may be some temporary numbness of skin of the nose which improves as swelling improves.

When will I be able to return to my usual activities?
Most patients can be seen in public in one week after the splint is removed. It is important to avoid strenuous activity for two weeks. At this time you can gradually work back to your usual exercise routine (if this applies). Contact sports should be avoided for six weeks.

Will the surgery affect my breathing?
Yes, it should improve it! Usually the nose will be stuffy after the surgery but after several weeks improvement should be noticeable, particularly if you had obstruction before your surgery.

Will I need to have more surgery on my nose?
The individual goals of nasal surgery can usually be obtained in one surgery. There are times when a "touch up" procedure needs to be performed. Noses that have been broken, crooked noses, and noses that have had previous surgery are generally more difficult to correct. These situations are more likely to require a revision procedure.

What are the risks?
There are risks with any surgical procedure; however the risks of facial plastic surgery are minimal. Bleeding, infection, unfavorable scarring, asymmetry and persistent nasal deformity are rare. These will be discussed during your consultation as well as ways to avoid them.
