Facial LiposuctionMany times patients will present with accumulation of fat in the submental area (underneath the chin) and in the jowls. This accumulation of fat in the face is common as the face ages, and can also be due to weight gain as well as heredity. The impact of ancestry is commonly found in our facial structure. If either your father or mother had a full round face and receded chin, there is a good chance that you will also possess the same characteristics. It is not appropriate to perform facial liposuction of excess fat in the neck and jowls if due to an overall weight problem.
However, once general weight loss has occurred, this procedure is appropriate for areas resistant to weight loss. Facial liposuction can create an aesthetically pleasing angle between the chin and the neck on profile and help establish the outline of the jaw. Also, facial liposuction can complement other cosmetic procedures, such as a chin augmentation to eliminate a double chin.
Before After Before After
Several questions regarding facial liposuction which are frequently asked include:
What does the procedure entail?
After the face is anesthetized, a small thin instrument known as a cannula is inserted through a small incision placed in a natural skin fold underneath the chin and /or behind the ears. This instrument is passed just underneath the skin and the unwanted pockets of fat are removed safely. The procedure usually takes approximately 45 minutes. What can I expect after surgery?
There will be swelling and bruising but the majority is gone within one to two weeks. Remember that 80% of the swelling is gone after two weeks and another 10% after two months. There may be some numbness under the chin with feeling returning as swelling resolves. When can I return to my usual activities?
Usually one to two weeks is all that is necessary to allow for the healing period. At this point you can return to your usual activities but it is best to do so in a gradual fashion. Will I have any sutures?
Small delicate sutures under the chin and behind the ear are usually removed within one week. What results can I expect?
Facial liposuction frequently provides an immediately gratifying result. This is because with good skin elasticity (the ability of the skin to re-conform to the underlying tissues), the new sculptured contour of the face is readily apparent. Poor skin elasticity is seen with aging and usually it is necessary to tighten the skin after facial liposuction as is done with the face lift procedure. What are the risks?
There is risk associated with any surgical procedure but these are usually minimal in facial plastic surgery. Bleeding, infection, unfavorable scarring, contour irregularities, and nerve injury are rare. These will be discussed during your consultation as well as ways to avoid them.
