There has been significant recent interest in cosmetic surgery of the lips. As the lip ages the pink portion begins to recede and the lip becomes thinner. Lip augmentation can allow for a fuller, plumper lip associated with a more youthful appearance. For patients interested in Lip Augmentation, there are various filler materials that are used in the augmentation process. Lipostructure® is an excellent technique for augmentation of the lips. Lip advancement involves an incision made just above the pink part of the lip to allow for advancement. Some patients will choose to have either the upper lip or both lips advanced. This can be discussed during your consultation. The incision usually heals to a fine white line that can easily be covered by lipstick. Initially there may be some redness or firmness in the incision but with patience and time this will resolve. Occasionally dermabrasion may be performed on the incision for better blending if necessary.

Some commonly asked questions about lip advancement include:

What can I expect immediately after the surgery?
Swelling and numbness will occur. Cool compresses after the surgery will help with the swelling. Discomfort is minimal and can usually be treated with oral medication. Remember that a majority of the swelling will be gone in two weeks. As the swelling subsides the feeling in the lips will return.

How long will it be before I can wear lipstick?
The delicate sutures used for this surgery will be removed in one week. Lipstick can be applied several days later.

What are the risks of the surgery?
There is risk with any surgical procedure; however, the risks of facial plastic surgery are minimal. Bleeding, infection, asymmetry and scarring are rare. These will be discussed during your consultation as well as ways they can be avoided.
