Eyelid Surgery/BlepharoplastyIt is said, "The eyes are the windows to the soul." When you look at a face the first structures you focus upon are the eyes. Therefore, changes that occur with aging are readily noticed around the eyes. These changes include excess skin of the eyelids as well as bulges around the eyes. Not only does excess skin create a heavy, tired look but may create excessive wrinkling of the forehead because of lifting the skin off of the upper eyelids. The excess skin of the upper eyelid will sometimes rest on eyelashes making application of eye makeup difficult. The bulges or puffiness are caused by fat around the eyes pushing through a thin membrane of the orbit similar to a hernia in the abdomen. The main purpose of eyelid surgery is to remove the excess skin as well as bulges or "bags" under the eyes.
It is important for us to know if you have any problems with your eyes, such as dry eyes or vision problems. We may recommend an examination with an eye doctor.

Some frequent questions about Eyelid Surgery include:
Where will the incisions be?
The incisions and therefore the scars are usually well tolerated with eyelid surgery because they are well concealed and the skin around the eye is very thin and heals well. The incision in the upper eyelid will go into the natural fold of the eyelid that is formed by opening and closing the eye. Many times surgery in the lower eyelid to remove the "bags" or bulges can be performed without a skin incision at all. This incision is placed on the inside of the eyelid. This can be combined with Laser Skin Resurfacing to improve wrinkling of the lower eyelid. An incision in the lower eyelid skin may be necessary to remove excess skin or creepiness. I will show you the incision techniques during your consultation and advise which is best for your particular situation. How long will I have bruising or swelling?
The majority of swelling and bruising is gone in one to two weeks with most people being able to return to work in one week. A pair of dark glasses is sometimes helpful in the immediate postoperative period to hide the bruising and swelling. It is important for us to know if you are taking any aspirin products or "blood thinners" because these can contribute to swelling and especially bruising. We will instruct you to use cool compresses for 48 hours after your surgery, which will help diminish the bruising and swelling. When can I wear eye makeup again?
Most patients can apply eye makeup seven to ten days after the surgery. Can I wear eyeglasses or contacts during the postoperative period?
Eyeglasses can be worn 24 hours after the surgery. You will be instructed not to allow the eyeglasses to pull down on the incisions. Contacts should not be worn for ten days. Also, eyebrows should not be tweezed or waxed for two weeks. These maneuvers can cause tension on the eyelid incisions that can delay wound healing and promote widening of the scars. How long before my sutures are removed?
There will be a small suture in the upper eyelid as well as small delicate sutures along the upper and lower eyelid incisions. All sutures will be removed several days after your surgery. What are the risks?
There are risks associated with any surgical procedure but these are usually minimal in facial plastic surgery. These risks include bleeding, watery eyes, change or loss of vision and ectropion (the turning down of the eyelid) and lagopthalmos (the inability to close the eye) are extremely rare. These will be discussed during your consultation as well as ways to avoid them.
