Dermabrasion

Acne or traumatic lacerations of the face can cause scarring of facial skin. It is the raised nature of a scar that casts shadows and allows for contrast that is detected by the human eye. The process of dermabrasion involves removing the raised areas to lessen the area of demarcation and to soften contour irregularities. This is usually done with a rotating instrument. Several procedures may be necessary to obtain an optimum result. It should be stressed that the goal of dermabrasion is improvement and not perfection. Scarring can never be totally removed although it can be lessened with scar revision and dermabrasion and camouflaged with makeup.

Questions frequently asked during consultation for dermabrasion include:

How will I know if I am a candidate for dermabrasion?
This will be discussed during your consultation. Certain types of skin will respond better to dermabrasion than other types. The skin of the face is unique in that it usually responds well to dermabrasion and can regenerate the layers of skin. There are certain skin types however that may not tolerate dermabrasion. An example would be dermabrasion of a darker pigment individual, which may result in hypo pigmentation or lightening of the skin. It will be important during your consultation to discuss your skin sensitivities, history of fever blisters, previous skin treatments, or the previous use of acne preparations. All these are important determinants of how the skin will heal.

What should I expect immediately after surgery?
Initially, skin will be red and have an appearance that is seen with any abrasion. The skin will be covered with ointment in order to keep the treated area moist. We will instruct you regarding how to treat the skin during the postoperative period.

What are the risks?
There are risks with any treatment however the risks with facial aesthetic treatments are minimal. Risks such as scarring, pigmentation problems, and blocked oil glands are rare. These will be discussed during your consultation as well as ways to avoid them.
