Botox® Treatment

Many wrinkles are actually creases that have been formed by making the same expression thousands of times. These "expression lines,” include frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow's feet; are due to the contraction of a muscle under the skin in that area. Botox® acts to relax the muscle responsible for creating the wrinkle.

What is Botox®?
Botox® is a purified protein toxin produced by the bacterium, clostridium botulinum. Although Botox® is a toxin, it is an extremely safe product with over 20 years of clinical experience when used for aesthetic purposes; very small amounts are strategically placed to allow for the desired level effects.

How is Botox® used?
Botox® is administered in units in much the same way that most medications are administered in milligrams. Botox® is not a one size fits all treatment. During the consultation, Dr. Greco will determine the dosage of Botox® to treat your areas of concern. It takes approximately three to seven days for the effects of the Botox® to become apparent. Dr. Greco will need to see you back in two weeks post-injection to evaluate your result. At this time, Dr. Greco will be able to determine that you have received the adequate dosage. If, at that time it is determined that additional units of Botox® are required to achieve the desired result, Dr. Greco will administer those additional units at that time. As a baseline treatment, Dr. Greco will typically administer 25 to 30 units in the glabella region (frown lines), 30 to 35 units in the crows feet, and 15 to 20 units in the forehead.

Does a Botox® injection hurt?
When Botox® is injected there is an initial minor sting for a few seconds. Once the injection is complete, there is minimal discomfort.

Where can Botox® be injected?
The most common areas for the use of Botox® are the frown lines between the eyebrows, the horizontal forehead lines, and the crow's feet. It is also being used more in the lower face to complement filler injections.

How long does a Botox® treatment last?
The effects of Botox® usually last three to five months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of Botox® may begin to last longer, sometimes up to six to eight months.

Are Botox® treatments for everyone?
There are very few restrictions regarding Botox® treatments. Patients who are pregnant or have certain neurologic diseases should not be treated.
