Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion skin treatments in Philadelphia at the Eastern Cosmetic Surgery Center can treat scars caused by acne or traumatic lacerations of the face. Because scars are slightly raised, they cast shadows and create contrast that is detected by the human eye. Dermabrasion uses a rotating instrument to decrease the raised areas and soften contour irregularities.

To obtain optimal results, several procedures may be necessary. The goal of dermabrasion is improvement, not perfection. Scarring can never be totally removed, but it can be lessened with scar revision and dermabrasion, making it easier to be camouflaged with makeup.

Dr. Timothy Greco's practice is limited solely to excellence in aesthetic surgery of the face, and he treats patients from Philadelphia and out of the area. To schedule your appointment for skin care treatments in Philadelphia at the Eastern Cosmetic Surgery Institute, request a consultation online, or call (610) 664-8830 today.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know if I am a candidate for dermabrasion?

This will be discussed during your initial consultation. The facial skin is unique in that it usually responds well to dermabrasion and can regenerate the layers of skin. That being said, however, certain types of skin respond better to dermabrasion than others, and some do not tolerate it at all. For example, dermabrasion of darkly pigmented skin can cause hypopigmentation or lightening of the skin. During your consultation, it will be important to discuss your skin sensitivities, history of fever blisters, previous skin treatments, any radiation treatments, or the prior use of acne preparations, particularly Accutane. All can influence how the skin will heal.

What should I expect immediately after surgery?

As with any abrasion, initially the skin will be red and inflamed. To keep it moist, it will be covered with ointment. You will be given specific instructions for caring for the treated areas.

What are the risks?

During your consultation, we will discuss any potential risks as well as ways to minimize them as much as possible. The risks with facial aesthetic treatments are minimal, but might include scarring, pigmentation issues, and blocked oil glands (milia).
