Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyes, the "windows to the soul," are usually one of the first facial characteristics we notice when we meet someone new. If your eyes are beginning to show age-related changes, including excess skin or bulges, eyelid surgery can restore a youthful, refreshed and rested appearance. Double board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Timothy M. Greco performs eyelid surgery for Philadelphia patients (also called blepharoplasty) to rejuvenate the eyes.

During your consultation with Dr. Greco, he will carefully examine your face and recommend treatment options to help restore vitality to your eyes. These options might include a brow lift to smooth the forehead and elevate the brows, laser skin resurfacing to reduce wrinkling of the lower eyelid, or BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments to smooth crow's feet or frown lines.

Dr. Greco's practice is limited solely to excellence in aesthetic surgery of the face, for patients from Philadelphia and out of the area. To discuss blepharoplasty with Dr. Greco, call the Eastern Cosmetic Surgery Institute at (610) 664-8830, or request a consultation online today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where will the incisions be placed?

The incisions and any resulting scars will be well concealed. The incision in the upper eyelid is concealed in the natural lid fold. Often, surgery in the lower eyelid to remove any "bags" or bulges can be performed without an exterior skin incision at all. Instead, a small incision is placed on the inside of the eyelid. During your consultation, Dr. Greco will show you the various incision techniques and recommend which is best for your individual needs.

How long will I have visible bruising or swelling?

Most swelling and bruising disappears in 1 to 2 weeks, at which time most people can return to work. Cold compresses for the first 72 hours significantly helps reduce bruising and swelling. Wearing dark glasses immediately after surgery works well to hide the bruising and swelling while in public.

Prior to surgery, you must disclose whether you are taking any aspirin products, herbal preparations, or "blood thinners," because these can contribute to swelling and bruising. You will be instructed to stop these medications 2 weeks before surgery.

When can I wear eye makeup again?

Most patients can safely apply eye makeup 10 to 14 days following surgery.

Can I wear eyeglasses or contacts during the postoperative period?

You can resume wearing eyeglasses 24 hours after surgery. You will be instructed to avoid letting the eyeglasses pull on the incisions in any way. Contact lenses can be worn after 10 days.

Can I tweeze or wax my eyebrows following eyelid surgery?

Eyebrows should not be tweezed or waxed for 2 weeks. Tweezing and waxing can cause tension on the eyelid incisions that can delay wound healing and widen the scars.

How long before my sutures are removed?

You will have one small suture in each upper eyelid as well as small, delicate sutures along the upper and lower eyelid incisions. All sutures will be removed several days following surgery.

What are the risks?

During your consultation, we will discuss any potential risks as well as ways to minimize them as much as possible. To limit risk, you will be asked to provide a complete list of medications and supplements you are currently taking as well as any problems you are having with your eyes (such as dry eyes or vision problems). We may recommend an examination with an eye doctor before proceeding with your cosmetic surgery.
