Facial Plastic Surgery is a branch of medicine involved with improving form while preserving function. The word "plastic" comes from the Greek word plastikos which means "to mold.” Plastic surgery can be classified into either general plastic surgery in which surgery is performed on the entire body, or regional aesthetic surgery in which a specific area of the body is addressed.
A facial plastic surgeon specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the face. Many specialties, such as general plastic surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology and maxillofacial surgery, have contributed to the development of facial aesthetic surgery and these physicians perform some or all of the range of facial plastic procedures. Facial aesthetic and reconstructive surgery is a main subspecialty of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. When training for board certification in otolaryngology, physicians concentrate on the complex anatomy, physiology and pathology of the face, head and neck, enabling them to become uniquely qualified to perform surgery in this region of the body.
Further intense training can be obtained by pursuing a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. A fellowship is the highest level of training a physician can obtain in a particular field of medicine. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery accredits these fellowships.
