Peels and Microdermabrasion

Although sags and bulges in the face can be corrected with surgery, fine wrinkles associated with aging can be treated at our Philadelphia office with microdermabrasion and chemical peels to improve the skin's surface texture. Deeper wrinkles are treated with CO2 laser resurfacing. The appropriate peel or microdermabrasion treatment for your needs will be discussed during your consultation.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel removes the top layers of the skin, which are then replaced by a new layer of skin. Peels can improve the color, texture and brightness of your skin, adding a youthful glow and reducing wrinkles, acne breakouts and enlarged pores. Deeper peels usually achieve more lasting improvement of wrinkles and may also improve elasticity of the skin by building new collagen. The peels we offer include:

  • Glycolic Acid
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Vitalize Peel®
  • Illuminize Peel™

Wrinkles that are caused by facial expression are more difficult to treat and may need BOTOX® or laser skin resurfacing. This will be discussed during your consultation.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive and safe method of removing the surface layer of dead and damaged skin cells while simultaneously stimulating new cell growth for a younger complexion. These treatments can:

  • Improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles
  • Minimize sun damage
  • Remove age spots and acne scars

The DiamondTome™ skin resurfacing system is a crystal-less microdermabrasion system. This means no mess and no discomfort, with immediate results. A series of treatments is usually recommended. Thereafter, you may maintain your results with monthly treatments. After microdermabasion treatments, your skin will appear rejuvenated and your skin care products will be more effective, penetrating into the live skin cells where they are needed most.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect immediately after the peel?

A lighter peel like salicylic acid may produce redness while a deeper peel can cause swelling and more pronounced redness. You will be instructed to wash the areas with lukewarm water and apply a skin cream.

What should I do to protect my skin during recovery?

The new skin formed after the peel takes time before it becomes more tolerable, therefore, you must avoid direct sun exposure and use SPF 30 or higher whenever outside. This will prevent uneven pigmentation from forming. Instructions will be given on application of sunscreen as well as ways of avoiding the sun.

How many treatment sessions are required?

Patients who have a chemical peel may require a different kind of peel after their initial treatment or another application of the same peel solution. Microdermabrasion generally requires a series of treatments for optimal results.

Is there much discomfort?

There is little to no discomfort during or after a microdermabrasion treatment. With peels, there will be some stinging as the solution is initially applied but this usually subsides in seconds. The stinging may return with a deeper peel but usually discomfort can be treated adequately with oral medication. Topical or regional anesthesia may be used for deeper peels in order to provide comfort.

What are the risks?

The risks associated with peeling depend on the solution used. Any peel can lead to uneven pigmentation as well as scarring. Both are rare complications.
